SAME Cafe | Serving Good Food for the Greater Good

Newsletter #150

It is difficult to believe that we have written 150 newsletters. It is
kinda mind-boggling actually!

Last week was another busy week at SAME. It started with a visit from Lisa
from Pine Creek Clothing. She brought us a check from “Feed Our Friends”.
This foundation is part of the Brighton Jewelry Collectibles. If you
remember last year, Brighton Jewelry came out with a new line of jewelry
that a percentage of the proceeds went to charities that help provide food.
Two local stores that sell Brighton selected SAME Cafe to receive a portion
of their sales and on Monday we received $8,000 from the national sales of
this jewelry line. How incredible! What a way to start off a week. Thank
you to Brighton and the Feed Our Friends campaign and to all of you who
supported us by purchasing some of the beautiful pieces.

On Tuesday, we had some students here from Libby’s old school, Logan,
learning about how we make our pizza dough and helping out.

On Wednesday night we held our first graduation party of the season here.
One of our former volunteers wanted to celebrate her special day with
dinner here after her ceremony. It was fun to have Tirzah and her family

On Thursday night we hosted Chicks with Checks. This is a national
organization of woman who support local, small non-profits by having
“parties with a purpose”. There were about 20 women here who came and
visited with each other and had a great time. A portion of the money raised
will support SAME Cafe. Thanks ladies!

We had three days of great volunteers this week from Simpson College. We
were excited to have such a dedicated group of young people helping out at
SAME. They were in Denver for a class on social justice. The students
volunteered at various organizations around Denver and will spend next week
in Estes Park. Thanks for the hard work!

On Friday we had a visitor from WI from the Veterans Service Organization.
Currently this group has 7 transitional and permanent housing facilities
serving homeless veterans as well as day service centers. They are building
Veterans Manor, a 52 unit affordable living apartment building with
supportive services to open May 2011. On the ground floor will be a full
commercial/industrial kitchen which will not only produce outsourced meals
to fill city contracts, but also serve as a job training program for
homeless veterans in the food preparation and service industry. Attached to
the kitchen will be a store front cafe’ serving affordable and nutritious
meals to the community. Dawn was on a trip to visit various other
restaurants that operate in a “pay what you can” style. It was great to
visit with her and share what we can to help them open.

Come join us this Friday, May 21 for an evening of fun and games. SAME Cafe
Game Night starts at 6:30 with dinner being served from 6:30-7 and games
start at 7. Suggested donation of $10 per person. Bring your favorite game
and some friends too!
