We can’t believe it but we have great news! MSN will be publishing the conclusion of the hometown hero campaign today and So All May Eat/SAME Cafe was the overwhelming audience favorite. Representatives said they were proud to include our efforts as part of their year-end coverage and to give our work additional exposure. The $10,000 award is amazing and we are honored and grateful to all of you who voted for us and spread the word. This amount of money is incredible for SAME. We can’t thank you all enough!
In addition (when it rains, it pours!) — we have been awarded the Channel 7 Everyday Hero award. It will air multiple times this week — the first was 10pm Sunday night. Keep your eye out for that and we will post a link on our site.
On Saturday we were visited by a woman named Rachel. Earlier in the week she sent an email and asked if she could set up an appointment to chat with us about an project she was beginning. She had heard great things about Same Cafe and although she lives right around the corner she had yet to make it to the cafe to experience the work we do. When she came in, she told us
that she decided to take on a 28 day GULP (Giving Up Life’s Pleasures) challenge and had listed Same Cafe as one of the organizations that could benefit from the project. She is the second person to tell us about GULP. On Christmas Eve a woman named Ann and her mother came and volunteered. Ann created GULP and wanted to end her project with a day of service at the cafe. You can learn more about this interesting and creative GULP project and see the blog Rachel’s created here: http://racheletto.blogspot.com/
She has a link to Ann’s original project on her page. Make sure you check them both out.
Over the MLK weekend (we will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18 for MLK day) we will be heading to New Orleans for a summit of like-minded people. One World Cafe in Salt Lake City has organized a conference where we get to spend a couple days meeting with folks who want to open community kitchens in other parts of the country. We will be presenting along with OOEE and participating in panel discussions. We are excited to travel to NOLA (can’t wait to see you Aunt Jane and Uncle Terry) and to network with so many folks wanting to help their communities.
Mark you calendars for two very exciting SAME Cafe events. First is our 2nd showing of an Argust Fest film at the cafe. We will host a movie night where we watch *Fresh*, a movie that celebrates farmers, thinkers, and business people across America who are reinventing our food system. See http://www.argusfest.org/2009/12/31/fresh for more details. The second event will be a Game Night to be held on Friday, Jan. 29th from 6:30-9:00. We’ll have dinner available at 6:30 and board/card games to follow. See
