SAME Cafe | Serving Good Food for the Greater Good

Newsletter #121 10/11/09

Last week, family members from the Margret Pahl Stewart Foundation were here to visit us and offer their continued support. This is the same foundation that donated the truck.  It was great to meet the various members of the foundation and share the cafe with them.  We want to thank the members of this foundation for all of their generous support.

We are excited to tell you that we got new t-shirts.  MIGHTY Karma (a local brand marketing firm) came to volunteer their time to the cafe Thursday and brought gifts.  They designed and printed up some awesome t-shirts for us.  Jeff, Andy, Jess, Jen, and Ester came and worked all day in the new “uniforms.”  It was so great to have such helpful volunteers and to just be surrounded by such great people.  Brad and I put our t-shirts on right away!  They are terrific.  Stop in soon and take a look at the new duds.  We are asking for a minimum donation of $5.

But don’t stop in Monday!  We will  be closed for Columbus Day, which is Monday, Oct. 12th.

This past Friday, Libby and one of our directors volunteered with Project Homeless Connect.  This was a half-day event designed to give the homeless population the opportunity to access many services all in one location.  Project Homeless Connect is a partnership of Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Denver’s Department of Human Services, and Mile High United Way. Numerous government offices, nonprofit agencies, businesses, and many committed volunteers participate in this grassroots program.  This was the 8th time this event was held.  Hundreds of people accessed vital services like food stamps, housing assistance, flu-shots, and employment services.  Other help provided included legal aid, social security, and haircuts. Libby and Jay volunteered to be paired up with a family and guide them through the day.  It was a moving experience.  Libby will talk your ear off about it.  Next time you are in, just ask her to tell you about the people she connected with that day.

The last couple of days after closing we have seen a man walk up to the door and drop a dollar or two through the mail slot. Each time, we try to run to the door and unlock it to greet him and thank him but he is too fast. These are the moments when we witness the goodness of humanity and just smile. I love to witness people paying it forward!
