SAME Cafe | Serving Good Food for the Greater Good

Newsletter #120 10/5/09

This was a much quieter week around the cafe than last.  We had a visiting student from the Logan School come by to interview and observe our operation, which was really fun.  She is studying what it takes to start your own business, and hopefully we were able to answer at least a couple of her questions.  She wondered about advertising and how we approach that aspect of business.  We don’t actually spend much money on advertising.  We have had a few ads in Life on Capitol Hill (our neighborhood paper) and the ReDirect Guide.  These two local periodicals reach a local and eco-friendly population of readers which we feel could be interested in our unique philosophy.  It was nice to share what we have learned about business with such an eager listener.

One of our long-time volunteers, Sue, “the pie lady”, went and harvested vegetables for us at Miller Farms this past week.  She brought us tons of potatoes, carrots, and peppers.  We love getting to use such great local produce!  Some of the items on last week’s menu went straight from the garden to the table in less than a couple of hours.  There is nothing like the taste of garden fresh vegetables.

Do any of you know anything about growing your own sprouts?  We are thinking about testing this out.  Libby got a book from the library this week and is going to read all about it.  We love using sprouts in our salads and thought it would be great to grow our own.  We have heard it is easy but if any of you have any tips, we’d appreciate it.

We will  be closed for Columbus Day, which is Monday, Oct. 12th.
