SAME Cafe | Serving Good Food for the Greater Good

Newsletter #119 9/28/09

So this was a really full week!  We have been crazy busy and it just keeps getting better.

On Monday of this week, we had Craig Spinks, a video producer, here from a website called Recycle Your Faith where
he posts a video once a week which explores various aspects of faith
and leaves the topic open ended so that
people can discuss online or in small groups.  One of his goals for the
site is to tell stories of people who are doing interesting things when
it comes to service.  He filmed the cafe in action and did some
personal interviews with Brad and I.  We will share the link to this
video when we get it.

Then
on Monday night, we hosted a small group of young adults from a local
church.  They helped us scrub the kitchen top to bottom.  We sat down
and ate together after a little hard work.  It was a wonderful evening
of service and fellowship.

We had some interesting visitors this week as well.  A high school
classmate of Brad’s walked in the door unannounced one day and some
distant cousins of Brad’s were here telling us their story of living in
Denver 50 years ago doing service work.  We got to share stories of
Brad’s grandma who turned 92 on Wednesday. It was nice to make those
connections!

On Wednesday morning we were able to attend a breakfast fundraiser benefiting Urban Peak http://www.urbanpeak.org/up_den.html
We learned that Urban Peak is the only licensed youth shelter in
Denver.  They also provide health and human services, street outreach,
education and employment training and help with long-term housing.
Since 1988, Urban Peak has been there for tens of thousands of young
people providing a continuum of services and an alternative to life on
the streets.  This was a great chance for us to support another
fabulous organization in Denver and make lots of connections.  We also
got to sit at Mayor Hickenlooper’s table which was a really exciting
opportunity for us.

On Thursday, most of our volunteers for the day came from the Whole
Foods store in Cherry Creek.  Whole Foods encourages their employees to
get involved in the community and this is the second time this specific
store has organized a volunteer day.  Thank you Whole Foods, Cherry
Creek.

We also had a class visit from Johnson & Whales on Thursday.
Brad took some time in the morning to tell a group of food and beverage
students about the history of SAME.

On Friday and Saturday we
had another film crew here from Oregon.  Susan and David started The
Next US which is a journey into the heart of
America to find those who are thriving while supporting high standards
of community,
sustainability, ecology, and cultural evolution.  You can find out more
about them by watching this video http://www.thenextus.com/2009/07/03/episode-1/
and checking out their website.  We had so much fun sharing the story
of SAME Cafe with them and are excited to see the outcome of days spent
together.  They will be traveling the country filming stories of
remarkable people doing remarkable things.

Isn’t it interesting that two film crews were here this week?

We
had a great meeting with Mindi & Matt from Two Tables Marketing who
are going to help us revamp the website.  They have some great ideas
for renovating the site and making it more user friendly.

The work week ended with a Harvest Celebration with Growing
Colorado.  This is a group of refugee children who worked all summer
tending to gardens in people’s yards and harvest vegetables.  We
purchased a lot of our fresh produce from this group and we were happy
to celebrate the harvest with them.  We will wear our t-shirts with
pride.  Thanks Denise Lines for all the hard work.

The ebb and flow of the cafe fascinates me.  Some weeks are quiet
and routine while other weeks are full of excitement and surprises!
Being here full-time has allowed me to see the heart and passion that
Brad has for this up close and personal.  I am so lucky to get to work
with him everyday and feed off of his energy!
