We haven’t updated this blog in so long, you would think that we haven’t had anything to say! In reality, there was so much stuff happening in August that we just didn’t have time to write it all down.
First off, the 1st annual SAME Cafe Golf Outing on August 5th was a huge success! We had 40 golfers show up on a beautiful Colorado Sunday to participate in the activities. The winning team (pictured below) ended up scoring an amazing 13 UNDER par — incredible! Many thanks go out to all the organizers, players and hole sponsors. Because of your participation we were able to raise over $2500 for the cafe, which will allow us to feed approximately 1000 people!!!
The next item of note is an unfortunate one. On Saturday Aug. 25 the donation box was stolen out of the cafe. Thankfully no one was hurt, and we don’t believe the thief got away with very much cash. However, it just reminds us how many desperately needy people are still out there.
On a much better note, we were interviewed and included in an article on “Pay What You May” restaurants that was published in last Tuesday’s (8/28) Wall Street Journal. Also mentioned were the One World Cafe in Salt Lake City and the Terra Bite Lounge in Kirkland, WA. The article speaks about the pros and cons of the model, and is very positive overall. We are ecstatic ourselves — getting mentioned in the Wall Street Journal is big stuff!
And most recently, our friend Scott Fliegelman of Fast Forward Sports was a participant in this weekend’s 24 Hours of Triathlon. Scott’s goal (which he reached successfully!!) was to finish 16 complete triathlons — yes, the thing where you swim, bike AND run all in the same race. In the 24 hour race, Scott covered 8 miles while swimming, 142.4 miles on the bike, and 44.8 miles of running! (Read more about his experience here) Why are we so excited about this? Well, besides finishing all that mileage and shooting for a world record in the process, Scott was enduring all this punishment as a fund raiser for SAME! He and his team solicited pledges in the week’s prior to the event, and while the totals are not in yet, at last update they were WELL over $2000 in pledges. That’s a lot to be excited about!!
